Family Arts and Literacy Night: Free Family Fun For All Ages!

Apr 25, 2019 | by Belinda Mendoza

Family Arts and Literacy Night is a free evening event that happens six times during the school year here at The Kroc Center. This program started 16 years ago shortly after The Kroc Center was founded, to create a fun and safe community space for families to get together, bond, learn and grow.

These events are an extension of our local education program where we go to 11 schools in the neighborhood and create educational art lessons for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. All of this is done in partnership with Arts for Learning San Diego, a local arts non-profit that emphasizes arts education. We often have other guest partners as well which can range from a small radio station to the San Diego Ballet.

At each of these monthly events there is a new theme and kids get to do an activity or watch a performance that corresponds with the theme. Each family is also given a book to take with them inspired by the event, so the learning can continue at home!
For our next two events on April 25 and May 23 we are partnering with Mingei International Museum to create exciting and memorable events for the whole family!

Our next event on April 25 at 6:30pm is all about Earth Day and helping the environment. Children will be able to make recycled art pieces while learning about going green and receiving a book to help them learn ways to save our planet.

On May 23 at 6:30pm there will be an interactive theater performance titled "Carnival of Little Animals" for families to enjoy. A creative animal themed art project will follow the performance! Attendees will also receive a zoo themed book to take home.

Both of these free events take place in the Rolando room and last about an hour and a half. You can RSVP on our Facebook page, but all are welcome to join regardless! We hope to see you and your family there!
