The Kroc Center Water Polo is a program designed to educate and share the appreciation of water polo amongst players, parents, and coaches. Our program provides a space for players who are beginners, to intermediate players looking to improve their skill set. The Kroc Center offers water polo programs for all skill levels.
Splash Pals introduces kids (ages 5–10) to the basics of water polo in a fun, non-competitive environment. Splash Pals practice in our recreational pool, and we require participants in Splash Ball to complete a 25-meter swim and independent float.
Water Drop-In Clinics challenge athletes (ages 10-15) with competitive play and advanced training. Drop-In Clinics are in the competition pool, and we require all participants to be able to complete a continuous 50-yard freestyle, and 1 minute tread water.
Both programs emphasize skill development, teamwork, and a love for the water in a safe and supportive setting. The last thing we ask is that our water polo players and parents come with a good attitude and learning mindset to prepare for the excitement ahead!

What’s the difference between Privates, Drop-Ins, and League? Water Polo Private Lessons are catered towards newcomers of any age looking to learn the “bare bone” fundamentals. This is ideal if you have little to no experience or if you are looking to improve the skills you already have 1 on 1 with a coach. Email [email protected] or call 619-269-1467 for scheduling and pricing.
Water Polo Drop-In Clinics are intended for youth athletes (ages 8-14) that are just beginning or trying out the sport and want more of a group setting. This group focuses on fundamentals and basic water polo skills. Keep in mind, some swim experience is required.
Intramural Youth Water Polo League is for the kids that have advanced past the Drop-In Clinics and have gotten a firm grasp of the required skills for their age group. The Intramural Leagues are split into 2 age groups (8-10 & 11-13 years old). These groups will be covering more advanced water polo skills and play in controlled scrimmages on a weekly basis.
Youth Water Polo Mini Sessions: This 3-day session will be an expansion from the previous specialized clinics and improve fitness through diverse dry-land and in water workouts. Each day will cover a critical water polo skill (ex. Passing, ball handling, body positioning, & shooting.) The skills are ordered sequentially based on the appropriate introduction of skill and technique development. The session is open to girls and boys with previous participation in KROC Water Polo Clinics/League/Mini-Sessions. Participants must pass a swim test (Continuous 50 yard freestyle with side breathing and the ability to tread for 2 minutes) More information found here
How long is a typical session? Our sessions are typically 9 weeks long with a 2 week break in between. For example, our spring session will start April 1st and go until June 2nd. Intramural Leagues will not be offered during the summer months, please reference the drop-in clinic schedule or Youth Water Polo Mini Sessions Session Dates and Times can be located on our aquatics page

Private lessons can be catered for at your choosing depending on if there is an available instructor.
Are there any discounts or scholarships for KROC polo? Kroc Center participants who are members receive a 10% discount on the Youth Intramural League. Kroc Center participants who are members receive a 10$ discount for each Youth Drop-in clinic.Scholarships are only offered through our Family resource department and eligible for the following Water Polo programs: Youth Intramural Leagues and mini sessions.
What is the specific age/skill ranges for each group? The Drop-in Clinics are considered our beginner level along with 1 on 1 private lessons. Ages for this group would be 8-14 year olds with the ability to swim 4 laps without assistance along with 1 minute of treading in open water. Although some swimming experience is necessary, water polo knowledge is not important. This group will be covering the basics and fundamentals of the sport in each session. The Youth Intramural League (8-10 year olds)/(11-14 year olds) as said before is an advancement of the skills learned from the Drop-ins. Athletes in either of these groups will have a longer practice time, cover more advanced skills, and scrimmage frequently.
Is there a necessary tryout or a swim test? Yes! For the Drop-in Clinics, we require our athletes to have the ability to swim 4 consecutive laps and tread water for 1 minute without assistance. For the more advanced groups (Youth Intramural Leagues) athletes should be able to swim 8 consecutive laps, tread 2 min, and have a basic understanding of eggbeater/head up freestyle.
What group fits my son/daughter's age/skill the best? Drop-in Clinics are for newcomers and beginners looking to try out the sport. The age for this group consists of 8-14 year olds. If your son/daughter has more advanced skills and is between the ages of 8-10 years old, Youth Intramural League is ideal. If your son/daughter is younger than our 11-14 year old group yet advanced enough to compete at the higher level, a tryout will be held and continued practices with that group will be decided upon through a coach.
What equipment is necessary to buy/bring to practice? It is important that athletes wear a pool safe swimming suit and bring a towel and a water bottle for mid practice hydration breaks. Goggles are optional as we will use them for warmups & in water demonstrations for underwater visibility. Athletes with a medical condition requiring an inhaler are expected to bring and maintain it at every practice.
Is it mandatory to attend every scheduled practice per week? It is understood that it is hard to attend every practice, yet we encourage the athletes to attend as much as possible. If there is a situation in which an athlete cannot attend a scheduled practice for a duration of time, please contact head coach Keanu Martinez [email protected] & reference our cancellation and refund policy below.
