Honoring Vietnam Veteran Percy J. Tolliver: A Call to Support Our Heroes
As we approach Veterans Day weekend, we want to shine a spotlight on a true American hero, Vietnam Veteran Percy J. Tolliver. Mr. Tolliver is not only a symbol of courage and resilience, having earned the Purple Heart twice during his service, but he is also a reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans. Percy is now a Kroc Center Family Resource Client, underscoring the importance of our community's support for those who have given so much for our country.
Percy J. Tolliver is a living testament to the indomitable spirit of our veterans. He served our country with valor during the Vietnam War in the United States Army and, during his service, was wounded in action twice, earning two Purple Hearts. His bravery and commitment to protecting our freedoms cannot be overstated. Percy has spent much of his adult life giving back to his community by volunteering his time to help local San Diego children. Yet, like many veterans, Percy has faced challenges upon returning home, and this is where our community and the Kroc Center can make a real difference.
After his service, Percy faced numerous challenges that many veterans encounter – physical and emotional wounds, reintegration into civilian life, and finding stable employment. The day after he arrived home from Vietnam, his sister Betty was killed in a car crash. This was the same sister he had helping with her four children by sending his full paycheck while he was overseas. Percy had challenges with the Veterans Association with his medical record over the years as well. Over time, these challenges have led Percy to seek assistance from the Kroc Center Family Resource Center, where he has found the support and care that he so rightfully deserves. This is a poignant reminder that our heroes are not invincible; they need our help, especially in their times of need.
“I have known Mr. Tolliver and his girls for over 15 years in my former work,” says Pamela George, Director of Family Resources Center at the Kroc. “He was parent in my programs, volunteer basketball coach, financial supporter and youth advocate. It does my heart good knowing that the Kroc Family Services Team can help him when he is in need with emergency services. Always believe there is good in the world.”
Percy's story is just one of many, and the need is ongoing. This Veterans Day weekend, we urge our community and Kroc Center members to give back in any way they can. Whether through monetary donations or non-perishable food items, your contributions can make a significant impact in the lives of veterans like Percy. Your generosity can help ensure that these brave individuals receive the support they deserve after their years of service and sacrifice.
